ArtVantage presents an appreciation of the genius of Charles Baudelaire through the writings of modern day critics and reviewers and principally through the artistry of highly regarded Indian artist Samij Datta.

Baudelaire’s recognition in his own time may have been limited but his influence on the generations to come was significant. Among those most influenced was Rimbaud who praised him in a letter as 'the king of poets, a true God'. Mallarmé published a sonnet in Baudelaire's memory. Marcel Proust in an essay published in 1922, stated that along with Alfred de Vigny, Baudelaire was 'the greatest poet of the nineteenth century'. Edmund Wilson credited Baudelaire as providing an initial impetus for the Symbolist movement. T. S. Eliot claimed that the poet had 'great genius'. Introspective and dark his poetry may have been, controversial his reputation and a life beset with drama, but he left an outstanding legacy of inspiration to writers, musicians and artists.

Fusion - the very word evokes the marriage of extremes; the past and the present, the sciences and the arts, the intellectual and the spiritual. ArtVantage celebrates the fusion of great cultural streams such as here with the forging of links between the visual arts and music - to help define the culture of the future.

“Charles Baudelaire - a legendary name, Extensively travelled, all thru' the bad lairs of the social system poetically. So that societal problems so exposed can get transformed with the light of 'its' awareness ....... Which Sri Samij Datta articulated aesthetically with his innovative and intuitive efforts helping that awareness to evolute into required conciousness of Wisdom enmasse.........." "The Baudelaire portrait is a powerful drawing with a strong impression! The black-and-white paint decision is perfect selected for the portrait. The face shows the real life with the ups and downs and special focus on the accentuated eyes gives a viewer the key to the inner life. A impressive work from Samij Datta.", - Ellen Sommer, MaaEarth Business & Art, Kehl/Germany.
